This effect is achieved by using canvas views and "Transitions" effect. (right side panel). When you're customizing it, make sure to change photos in every view so the next canvas view images would match the previous one.

Set up all your photos in the canvas view 8, select and copy all the photos in view 8, then delete all the photos in the other views for now. paste view 8's photos in each view, then starting in view two, delete photos 2-6, then in view three delete photos 3-6, and so on. this will save you a ton of time!
view one should be blank, and view eight shold be a duplicate of view seven for transition timing purposes.
